Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans in West Palm Beach

A Medigap policy pays the deductibles, copays and coinsurance that Original Medicare leaves to you. Which policy you can buy, and what you pay for it, depends on timing and on your health. We help Palm Beach County clients get both right.

There Is a Six Month Window When No Insurance Company Can Turn You Down

Inside your open enrollment window

Your Medigap open enrollment period runs for six months, starting the first month you are both 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B.

During those six months:

  • No carrier can refuse to sell you a policy

  • No carrier can charge you more because of your health history

  • No carrier can make you wait out a pre-existing condition

  • You can choose any plan any carrier offers in your area

After the window closes

Outside that window, and outside a few specific exceptions, carriers can ask about your health before they decide.

That means they can:

  • Decline your application

  • Charge you a higher premium based on your health

  • Apply a waiting period for a pre-existing condition

This is the part most people find out too late. If you choose a policy at 65 and develop a serious condition at 68, you may not be able to move to a different one, even if your premium climbs.

The window is also why timing matters more here than in any other part of Medicare. It does not open when you turn 65. It opens when you enroll in Part B, which for anyone who works past 65 can be years later.

Your Doctor Decides Your Treatment, Not the Insurance Company

This is the practical difference between a Medicare Supplement and the alternatives.

No networks. Any doctor, hospital or specialist that accepts Medicare.

No referrals. See a specialist when you decide you need one.

No prior authorization. The plan has no say in what treatment you receive.

National coverage. Show your red, white and blue card anywhere in the country.

The Three Medigap Plans Most People Should Be Choosing Between

Medigap plans are standardized by letter, which means a Plan G is the same coverage no matter which company sells it. Plans C and F closed to anyone who became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020, which leaves these three as the realistic choices for most people today.

Plan G

The most complete coverage available to new enrollees. You pay the Part B deductible each year, and after that most covered services cost you nothing. Suits people who want predictable costs and few surprises.

High Deductible Plan G

Identical coverage to Plan G with a much lower monthly premium cost, you pay a high annual deductible, before it begins paying. Until you meet it you are responsible for those costs yourself. Suits people in good health who want protection against a serious event rather than help with routine costs, and who can comfortably absorb the deductible in a bad year.

Plan N

Lower premium than Plan G, with two tradeoffs. You pay a small copay for office visits and emergency room visits. And Part B excess charges are not covered, which means if a provider does not accept Medicare assignment you can be billed up to 15% above the Medicare-approved amount. Suits people who see doctors infrequently and want a lower monthly cost.

Find Out Which Window You Are In

Before you look at premiums, it is worth knowing what you are able to buy. We will tell you:

Whether you have a guaranteed issue right, which lets you skip health questions entirely

What underwriting would likely look like if neither applies to you

Or call (561) 446-2821 and we will work it out in a few minutes.

The Same Plan G Costs Different Amounts Depending on Who Sells It

Because these plans are standardized, every carrier's Plan G covers exactly the same things. What changes is the price. Carriers set premiums on their own claims experience in your area, usually down to your ZIP code, so the same coverage can carry noticeably different monthly costs from one company to the next.

That makes this one of the few insurance decisions where you are shopping on price alone without giving anything up. The only way to do it properly is to look at every carrier writing that plan where you live, which is what we do before recommending anything.

What a Medicare Supplement Does Not Cover

Worth knowing before you choose this route rather than after.

Add the Part D premium to the Medigap premium and the monthly cost of this route is meaningfully higher than the alternative. What you get for it is the freedom described above. That is the trade, and it is worth making with clear eyes.

Four Situations Where Health Questions Do Not Apply

Missing your open enrollment window does not always mean you are out of options. Federal rules create guaranteed issue rights in specific circumstances, and each one comes with its own deadline.

You tried Medicare Advantage first

If you joined a Medicare Advantage plan when you first became eligible for Medicare, you generally have twelve months to change your mind and move to a Medigap policy without health questions. This is one of the most valuable rights in Medicare and one of the least known.

You are losing employer or union coverage

When group coverage that was paying after Medicare ends, a guaranteed issue right typically opens. This is common for clients who worked past 65 and are now retiring.

Your plan is leaving or you are moving

If your Medicare Advantage plan stops serving your area, ends its contract, or you move out of its service area, you generally have a right to buy certain Medigap policies without underwriting.

Your coverage ended through no fault of your own

If your insurance carrier terminates your Medicare Advantage Plan, or your coverage ends because of something other than nonpayment, a guaranteed issue right generally applies.

Every one of these has a time limit, and most are measured in weeks rather than months. If you think one of them fits your situation, call before the clock runs out.

Why Your Premium Goes Up, and When Switching Actually Works

Medigap premiums rise for most people most years. How yours rises depends on how the carrier prices its policies, and it is worth knowing which method applies to yours.

4 (2).png

Here is the part that usually goes unsaid. Shopping for a lower premium is good advice, and it only works if you can pass underwriting. Outside your open enrollment window or a guaranteed issue right, a carrier can decline you, which means the people most motivated to switch because of rising costs are often the people least able to do so.

And one more thing worth hearing early: Medigap premiums can get genuinely expensive once clients reach their 80s and 90s.

Comparing premiums is the easy part. Knowing which policies you are actually able to buy comes first, and it takes a few minutes on the phone.
